Kabam Design Test
This is a real design test issued to applicants by the company Kabam in 2022, and my response and analysis.
Answer the questions using the provided data about two units in a basic fighting game. Take this chance to demonstrate your balancing skills, how you present your findings and develop your design method. Please attach any supporting spreadsheets.
Exercise 1 - Balancing and spreadsheet test
Question 1.1: List the assumptions you’re making about combat.
Question 1.2: Please establish a rating system to represent the relative overall strength of combat units in this game using these two samples as a base.
Question 1.3: Please determine what unit, between the two, is most likely to win in combat against the other.
Question 1.4: Design one new ability for each unit so that their final ratings will be equal.
Exercise 2 - Creative systemic problem solving test
Question 2.1: Describe three more fighter types and their basic mechanics to be introduced in this system. How would the three new elements integrate with the first three? Use supporting graphs/flows if you feel they are important. This section should only be a few paragraphs long.
Question 2.2: We need to cut scope and it was decided to remove two of the six proposed classes. In a paragraph, can you select which ones you’d remove and keep and explain why?
In this hypothetical fighting game you’ll have the chance to demonstrate your systemic approach to creative problem-solving. Please provide answers based on the premise of developing the following rock-paper-scissors interactions for a prototype game:
My Response!
Some Highlights
I wrote a quick console program to simulate battles and verify results.
My new classes and how they interact with the existing ones.
How many hits (Y-axis) it would take each unit to defeat the other given the amount of time between attacks (X-axis). The solid lines represent the hypothetical most and least amount of hits, simulating if the unit gets a critical hit every attack, or never does.
